About Mich
Mich Gerber - Sound magician with double bass
Mich Gerber - contemporary double bass music
Mich Gerber is an eclectic, innovative, and exceptional double bass player who defined a never heared before musical art form. Some people call him a Space Bass Orchestra. He changed the double-bass's role and moved the instrument from its place in the back of the stage up front playing it as a lead instrument. His talent spans from the craft of composing pieces to elaborate live instrumental improvisations, building on a unique instrumental voice with its double bass. Mich Gerber went through classical training and unusual avantgarde crazy music projects in his past. Independent, engaged, and following consequently his path, he blurs the boundaries between jazz, classical and traditional folk song, between orient und occident, between ancient music and electronica.
Mich Gerber developed a very distinct way of playing his instrument, by plucking, bowing and using his body as a percussive tool. He is one of the first musicians to work with Live looping systems forming, creating layers of music and weaving it into a rich rhythmic and melodic soundscape. Mich Gerber leads us through a world of overtones with his original approach and percussive rhythm, occasionally employing 'noise' effects. Mich Gerber has toured around Europe: Jazz Festival Montreux (Switzerland), Festival des Nouvelles Scènes Dijon (France), Les Rencontres Transmusicales Rennes, (France), Jazz à Vienne (France), Colours of Ostrava (Czech Rep) etc. He has also been on tour in 15 countries and has released 6 albums.
With his double-bass he uses a live sampling technique to create layers of music, weaving the whole into a rich rhythmic and melodic soundscape. This way, he extends the complete acoustic range of his instrument. He leads us through a world of overtones with his original approach and percussive rhythm, occasionally employing modern 'noise' effects. Mich Gerber explores all the techniques available to the modern double-bassist from plucking, bowing and using the instrument as a percussive tool forming, in effect, a solo acoustic 'bass orchestra'. But even though his music has a contemporary feel, he explores ancient tone systems to achieve his unique sound. In his contempory music Mich Gerber plays time and again with archaic tone systems and elements. Sacred, abstract and oriental touches within his original compositions enable listeners to enter into different worlds.
